First Steps for Beginners

Homeschooling is not the kind of activity that can be summarized in a step-by-step list of how-to instructions. Each family has different situations, interests and needs and, therefore, a different homeschooling path. However, for the beginner who just wants to know What do I have to do to get started? - here is a list of the very simple most basic steps.

Legal
Find out what the legal requirements and regulations are for homeschooling in your state. You can do this by talking to local homeschoolers, but be sure to verify information by checking official state resources. Submit any required paperwork and note any recordkeeping requirements. If your child is currently enrolled in school, find out what paperwork is required to withdraw him or her.
Plan
Formulate some kind of plan for your homeschooling experience. This could be a detailed week-by-week lesson plan or a simple, general statement of what you hope to attempt and accomplish in the coming year. This step could also include developing a one-sentence explanation to use when people ask why you've chosen to homeschool - so you can respond with confidence and assure them that everything will be okay, without getting into a lengthy debate about educational issues.
Resources
Compile a list of basic educational resources you have and those you'll need to acquire. In the beginning, just include some of the basics such as: fiction and non-fiction books, games and toys, computer programs and web sites, community resources, and basic supplies for art, craft, and science projects. Don't go out and spend a lot of money - to start with, just emphasize things that you already have or those you can easily obtain.
Enjoy
Relax, have fun with your children, and enjoy the homeschooling experience. Homeschooling is usually a work in progress - you can make changes in the future. In the beginning, just concentrate on helping your children learn at home without worrying about all of the details.
